The Cooper Center for Environmental Learning is an outreach program of the University of Arizona College of Education, in partnership with Tucson Unified School District (TUSD). We work to increase ecological understandings and deepen feelings for nature. We do this by providing hands-on, research-based programs in science and earth education, by creating lifelong memories, and by inspiring learners of all ages to live more lightly and sustainably on the Earth.

Let’s do some fun activities with the Cooper Center!

Weather Wise

Weather Wise

Intended grades: 3rd/4th/5th

What is the difference between weather and climate?  What are greenhouse gasses?  What is global warming?  Join Camp Cooper educator Cliff in exploring these and other questions as we become ‘weather wise.’

Follow up with the Weather Wise worksheet or learn how to make your own Rain Gauge.

Plant Adaptations

Plant Adaptations

Intended grades: 3rd/4th

Surviving the desert requires each of us to make adaptations. What is an adaptation? Come along with Butterfly as she shows us all kinds of desert plants and how they adapt to survive in the desert.

Download these activity sheets to become a Desert Detective and learn more about Plant Adaptation.

Adopt a Rock

Adopt a Rock

Intended grades: Prek/kinder/1st/2nd

A classic by Arizona resident writer Byrd Baylor with unforgettable illustrations by Peter Parnall, Camp Cooper educator Mariah (aka Butterfly) reads “Everybody Needs A Rock” with permission from the author.

Then go outside, find a rock and fill out your Rocksheet with some help from Cliff at Cooper Center. You can also fill out this Rock Crossword Puzzle.

Backyard Birding

Backyard Birding

Intended grades: 3rd. 4th.5th

We may not all have backyards, but birds are all around us. In the trees, in the sky, nesting outside our windows or pecking around at the park (or the parking lot!). Tucson is a unique place to find a wide variety of birds – this video features our educator Cliff, and will help you learn how to identify birds and how their traits can tell you about how they live.

Let’s Go Birding around your house! You can also play some Bird Bingo right in your neighborhood and learn how to build a bird feeder for your flighty friends!
